The pendant emits glare-free, downward-directed light and also illuminates its own frame, creating a soft, pleasant glow from the center of the pendant. Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to the numerous changes lamp manufacturers were making to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs at the time, which, according to Henningsen, were completely pointless. The PH 5 accommodated a wide variety of light sources, all of which produced a pleasant light. This made the PH 5 so famous that it became synonymous with "the PH light," which continues to elevate even the most contemporary interiors today. Henningsen had his own unique, scientific approach to light and designed numerous fixtures based on the multi-shade system he invented in 1925 for high-quality, glare-free lighting. Using the logarithmic spiral as a basis, he achieved an even light distribution through the multi-shade system, which prevented glare and shadows. The numbers on the PH lamps refer to the size of the shades. The PH 5 mini has a top shade approximately 30 cm in diameter.
