The pendant emits glare-free, downward-directed light and also illuminates its own frame, creating a soft, pleasant glow from the center of the pendant. Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to the many changes that lamp manufacturers made to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs at the time, which Henningsen considered completely pointless. The PH 5 could accommodate all kinds of light sources, all of which produced pleasant light. This made the PH 5 so famous that it became synonymous with 'the PH light' that still elevates the most contemporary interiors today. Henningsen had his own scientific approach to light and designed numerous fixtures based on the multi-shade system he invented in 1925 for high-quality, glare-free lighting. Using the logarithmic spiral as a basis, he managed to achieve an even distribution of light through the multi-shade system, which made it possible to counteract glare and shadows. The numbers of the PH lamps refer to the size of the shades. The PH 5 mini has a top shade approximately 30 cm in diameter.
