The pendant emits glare-free, downward-directed light and also illuminates its own frame, creating a soft, pleasant glow from the center of the pendant. Poul Henningsen designed the PH5 in 1958 in response to the many changes lamp manufacturers were making to the shape and size of light bulbs at the time, which Henningsen considered completely pointless. The PH5 could accommodate all kinds of light sources, all of which produced a pleasant light. This made the PH5 so famous that it became synonymous with 'the PH light' which still elevates the most contemporary interiors today. Henningsen had his own scientific approach to light and designed numerous fixtures based on the multi-shade system he invented in 1925 for high-quality, glare-free lighting. Using the logarithmic spiral as a basis, he managed to achieve an even distribution of light through the multi-shade system, which made it possible to counteract glare and shadows. The numbers of the PH lamps refer to the size of the shades. The PH5 has a top shade of approximately 50 cm in diameter.
