The pendant emits glare-free, downward light and also illuminates its own frame, which produces a soft, pleasant glow from the centre of the pendant. Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 as a reaction to the many changes that lamp manufacturers were making to the shape and size of incandescent lamps at the time, which Henningsen felt were completely pointless. The PH 5 could accommodate a variety of light sources, all of which produced a pleasant light. This made the PH 5 so famous that it became synonymous with 'the PH light', which continues to enhance the most contemporary interiors today. Henningsen had his own scientific approach to light and designed numerous luminaires based on the multi-shade system he invented in 1925 for high-quality, glare-free lighting. With the logarithmic spiral as a basis, he managed to achieve an even distribution of light via the multi-screen system, which made it possible to counteract glare and shadows. The numbers of the PH lamps refer to the size of the screens. The PH 5 has a top screen of approximately 50 cm in diameter.
This lamp hangs in the store at Czaar Peterstraat 151 in Amsterdam.
